NAICOM workers protest ‘unfair labour practices’, demand improved welfare

Members of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) at the National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) have staged a peaceful picketing exercise over what they described as unfair labour practices and neglect of staff welfare by management.
Speaking during the protest on Monday, Ibrahim Mustapha, chairman of the ASCSN NAICOM unit, said the commission’s management has failed to honour existing agreements and directives from the ministry of labour despite several engagements.
He said the development had weakened trust between workers and management.
“The refusal to implement agreed welfare and administrative reforms has eroded trust between staff and management,” Mustapha said.
He added that workers would continue to push for compliance with labour policies and fair treatment.
Mustapha urged the management to return to the negotiation table to resolve the issues amicably.
“We will continue to press for compliance until our demands are addressed,” he said.
The union presented a 25-point demand list covering issues including delayed promotions, alleged selective implementation of policies, staff transfers, training opportunities, and welfare packages.
Among the demands are the immediate promotion of eligible staff, transparent recruitment and promotion processes, and an end to what the union described as “vindictive transfers”.
The workers also called for improved access to training opportunities and equal application of workplace policies across all cadres.
ASCSN further raised concerns over alleged preferential treatment in allowances and car grants, urging management to ensure equitable distribution in line with prevailing rates.
The union also demanded the implementation of monetisation policies, proper investigation into internal administrative processes, and inclusion of staff in key institutional activities.
Other issues highlighted include calls for better working conditions in zonal offices, improved security at the headquarters following reported theft incidents, and payment of outstanding allowances and rent advances. Thecable
