Revealed: Five common visa mistakes Nigerians make — and how to avoid them

Visa application documents
Applying for a visa can feel like navigating a minefield — especially when consulates are under greater scrutiny and rules vary by country. Below are five of the most common visa mistakes Nigerians make, why they matter, and step-by-step actions you can take to avoid them.
1) Incomplete or inconsistent application information
Small mismatches — A different spelling of your name, a wrong passport number, or dates that don’t line up — are an easy reason for delays or refusal. Visa centres and consulates expect the application form to exactly match your supporting documents (passport, birth certificate, bank statements, etc.) How to avoid it
Fill the online form slowly and copy each item exactly from your passport (full name, date of birth, passport number, nationality).
Double-check every field before submitting; have a second person read the form against your passport.
If a form asks for previous surnames or other names used, list them — omissions look like concealment.
Save screenshots and PDF copies of the submitted form and confirmation page.
Quick checklist
Passport copy beside you while filling the form.
One person completes the form, another proofreads.
Save a timestamped confirmation of submission.
2) Weak or poorly documented proof of funds Consular officers must be satisfied you can pay for your trip and will not rely on public funds. Vague bank figures, short-dated balances or unsupported “sponsorship” claims raise doubts and cause refusals. This is a frequent ground for tourist and study visa denials.
