The African Democratic Congress has criticised the recent celebration of Nigeria’s rebased Gross Domestic Product, calling it misleading and stating that rebased GDP does not translate to food on the table for Nigerians.
In a statement issued by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, on Tuesday, the ADC dismissed the excitement surrounding the GDP figures as mere “economic cosmetics” that do nothing to improve the living conditions of ordinary citizens or address the deep-rooted challenges plaguing the economy.
Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product grew by 3.13 per cent year-on-year in real terms during the first quarter of 2025.
This update was released on Monday in the latest economic report by the National Bureau of Statistics.
The NBS noted that this growth marks an improvement compared to the 2.27 per cent recorded in the same period in 2024. The data reflects a positive shift in the country’s economic performance over the past year.
According to the Q1 2025 GDP report, the primary drivers of this growth were the services and industry sectors, which contributed significantly to the overall economic expansion during the quarter.
In its reaction, the ADC stated that genuine economic growth should positively impact the lives of the people it should be experienced, not just proclaimed. Punch
