Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has condemned the abduction of Tochukwu Mbanugo, a consultant neurosurgeon at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, Anambra state.
Mbanugo was kidnapped on October 30 along the new Nnewi–Oba road while returning from work “after an intense day in the operating theatre”.
In a statement on Tuesday, Obi described the incident as “deeply troubling”, noting that it reflects the alarming state of insecurity in Nigeria.
The former governor urged the federal government to intensify diplomatic and security cooperation with the US to help combat the crisis.
He said the growing rate of kidnappings and violent crimes has made Nigeria one of the most unsafe countries in the world.
Obi added that beyond diplomatic efforts, urgent collective action is needed to confront insecurity and protect those working selflessly to serve others.
