Residents of the Loburo community in the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State have begun to heave a sigh of relief as road and drainage construction works have commenced in the area, following a report by PUNCH Metro.
In the report published in September, residents and business owners in the community lamented the dilapidated condition of the road.
According to them, the road had been damaged to the point where it became almost impassable, especially during rainfall.
Our correspondent, however, gathered on Sunday that the lawmaker had begun repairing the road which connects several parts of the community to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and other adjoining routes.
A community leader who identified himself simply as Elder Alokan also confirmed that work had commenced with the construction of the drainage system.
He said, “They started the construction of the drainage system last week. It’s not the community that is constructing it, but the Senator representing this district, Senator Olamilekan Adeola Yayi. The community has, since last year, requested the government to help with the construction of the road; we wrote letters and pleaded with the government, but nothing was done. However, Senator Yayi has come to our aid. This is not a political move; he is only fulfilling his duty.”
An engineer at the construction site explained that the project would cover both the road and the drainage system.
He said, “It is not only the drainage system that is being done; the road will also be constructed. However, we first want to map out the drainage system so that it will be easy to construct the road. The project is part of the senator’s effort to fulfil his responsibilities.”
A trader in the area who preferred to be referred to as Omowunmi noted that although the construction work had temporarily affected her business, the community would benefit from it in the long run. Punch
